Alfa Romeo 159 – BODY FUNCTIONALITY

The creators of Alfa Romeo 159 focused on the aesthetics of the exterior and interior. The functionality and spaciousness of the car took the background. It is impossible to say a bad word about the interior trim and equipment of most cars. The body is well protected against corrosion.

Alfa Romeo 159 – ENGINES

The core of the aftermarket (3/4 offers) is diesel – mainly four-cylinder 1.9 / 2.0 units. They are known for many Fiat / Opel models and are well stocked with spare parts. Imports of the powerful and great-sounding 5-cylinder 2.4 JTD are reduced by excise duties. 1.75 TBi, available from 2009-2011, is considered the best gasoline engine. Fans of the brand do not appreciate the flagship 3.2 V6. This is no longer the legendary Busso engine, but the Holden engine. The base 1.8, on the other hand, comes from Opel. Due to the lack of hydraulic compensation of valve clearances, it should rather not be equipped with an LPG system.

EMERGENCY

The cracking heads of the 2.4 diesel are bad. The 1.9 / 2.2 JTS gasoline engines have problems with the bushings, carbon in the intake and the timing system. The 1.75 TBi, 2.2 JTS and 1.9 JTDm versions had M32 gearboxes with poor bearings.

COSTS

A pre-purchase inspection is the only way to avoid serious expenses.

MARKET SITUATION

The ads are dominated by diesel. Most of the cars were imported, but unfortunately, some of them have been damaged.

WORTH KNOWING

  • The most powerful engine versions (3.2 V6 and 2.4 JTDM) were offered with a 4×4 drive. As in Audi, it was implemented by the Torsen center differential. The Q4 drive is fixed. Neither axis is attached.
  • The lifting was not only superficial. The car was reduced by 45 kg, which had a positive effect on handling and load capacity. Weight loss includes thanks to new wheels, aluminum suspension elements and brake calipers.

MODEL HISTORY

2005 – the premiere of Alfa Romeo 159
2006 – the offer is completed by the station wagon and related models Brera (coupe) and Spider (roadster)
2008 – extensive modernization
2009  – new 1750 TBi and 2.0 JTDm engines
2009  – withdrawal of diesel 1.9 / 2.4
2011  – end of production of Alfa Romeo 159

TYPICAL DEFECTS AND REPAIR COSTS

  • Bearing failures in M32 boxes – If the noise of the bearings is ignored, the gear housing breaks.
  • Suspension clearances – Multi-link front suspension is better to repair in full and branded replacements.
  • Worn inlet manifold with flaps. – More powerful 4-cylinder diesel and all 5-cylinder diesel have an inlet manifold with flaps to control the airflow. Fabricating the flap mounts causes leaks. The extreme scenario is their breaking out. There are two options – either removing the flaps or replacing the collector with a new one.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

+  Effective exterior, stylish interior.
+  Good handling, performance for most versions.
+  Reasonable prices even for well-kept cars.

Not very spacious interior, no LPG engine.
M32 emergency gearbox, unreliable JTS units.
High costs of suspension repairs, diesel 2.4.

WORTH BUYING

For everyday driving – 1.9 / 2.0 JTDm diesels. For connoisseurs of driving sensations – the Alfa 159 Ti with a 1750 TBi gasoline engine.

WATCH OUT FOR

Cars without any documentation. 1.9 / 2.2 JTS versions. Copies with LPG installation. In this model, this fuel does not work.
