Audi A1 2010-2019 – reviews, typical faults

Read Time:4 Minute, 1 Second

Audi A1 – A noble relative of Fabia and Polo. The Audi A1 is perfectly finished and geared towards the driving experience.

  • Years of production: 2010-2019
  • Engines: benz. 1.0-2.0 (86-231 hp), diesels 1.4-1.6 (90-105 hp)
  • Versions: htb 3d, 5d
  • Length / wheelbase:  396-398 / 247 cm,  width / height:  174/142 cm,  luggage compartment:  210-910 l

Audi A1 – BODY FUNCTIONALITY

The A1 is based on the Polo, but the sloping roofline limits space for second-row passengers and luggage. Against the background of the Mini, it is still perfect.

Audi A1 – ENGINES

A very wide range of petrol and diesel units. Among them, there is a gasoline 1.2 / 1.4 TSI from the EA111 family, which has problems with the timing chain and can burn a significant amount of oil.

Audi A1 – EMERGENCY

Serious problems can be expected in the 1.4 TSI TC (185 HP) version – the extreme scenario is even piston breakage. However, the engine was constantly modernized, so the younger the car, the lower the risk of failure. At high mileage, the DSG gearbox is no longer an advantage. The invoice for replacing the clutches and the dual-mass flywheel is in thousands of zlotys.

COSTS

The biggest burden on the budget is the purchase of the A1. Later, technical similarities with Fabia and Polo and a rich database of substitutes pay off. If you want to reduce expenses, you need to choose a car in the simplest possible configuration – e.g. with a manual transmission and a weaker engine.

MARKET SITUATION

The supply is large (over 200 cars), but the condition of the cheapest ones leaves a lot to be desired. It is worthwhile to make a regret at the beginning, rather than later, or have a problem with selling the car.

WORTH KNOWING

  • Version 1.4 TSI COD (140-150 hp; 2013-2018) has the function of extinguishing two cylinders with low power requirements, which is used to reduce fuel consumption.
  • The electric A1 e-tron prototype did not go into series production.
  • The top version of the S1 (from PLN 85,000) is technically significantly changed. In addition to the 4×4 drive with a clutch, Haldex has a multi-link rear axle suspension.

MODEL HISTORY

2010 – start of production
2012 – the range is supplemented by the 5-door Sportback, production of the limited to 333 units Audi A1 quattro (2.0, 256 KM) starts
2014 – the sports version of the S1 makes its debut
2015 – a delicate visual facelift combined with the introduction of new petrol engines – including 1.0 /1.8 TSI

TYPICAL DEFECTS AND REPAIR COSTS

  • Timing chain replacement on 1.4 TSI – Too weak tensioner and infrequent oil changes increase wear of the timing chain.
  • Servicing the DSG Transmission – At high mileage, DSG transmissions may need new clutches, for example.
  • Coolant pump failures – A relatively weak element of the 1.4 TSI TC engines are the liquid pumps integrated with the compressor clutch. Their wear is evidenced by noises (described by drivers as mousy squeaks) when changing engine revolutions. In the range of 2000-3000 rpm, however, the “whistle” of the compressor is acceptable.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

+  Attractive multi-unit configurations.
+  Perfectly finished interior.
+  Above-average driving characteristics and performance.

High cost of purchase and maintenance.
Significant service expenses possible – The Audi A1 is a small but complex car.
The condition of the cheapest copies.

WORTH BUYING

Serviceable diesel (preferably 1.6 / 2.0). The 1.4 TSI petrol engines with a timing belt (from the end of 2013) are also successful.

WATCH OUT FOR

Occasions. They do not exist for this model. You have to pay a lot for a good A1, but it’s worth it because it will not lose its value.
