The BMW 5 Series is always a hit, but generations change over the years. Now it’s time for the F10 series.

  • Years of production: 2010-2017
  • Engines: benz. 2.0-4.4 (184-575 hp), diesels 2.0-3.0 (143-381 hp)
  • Versions: sed, kmb
  • Length / wheelbase: 490/297 cm, width / height: 186/147 cm, luggage compartment: sed 520 l, KMb 560-1670 l

BODY FUNCTIONALITY

Bmw 5 F10 / F11 is a model of a family car. The sedan is elegant and the estate is practical. Both versions are carefully made and well protected against corrosion. Amateurs who evaluate cars only on the basis of the indications of paint thickness sensors, we remind you that in this price range, dealers have a budget to repair cars so that the sensor does not indicate anything suspicious. Note – the body of the F10 is largely made of light alloys (only the roof, boot lid and rear fenders are steel).

ENGINES

The commercial hit was the two-liter diesel with automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Richer buyers hunt down the 6-cylinder 530d, 535d and 550d (single, double and triple supercharged). Attention! The 525d diesel engine comes in two versions – the newer R4 / 218hp and the older R6 / 204hp.

EMERGENCY

The 5 series is considered to be more emergency than the previous model generation.

COSTS

Used “Fives” are expensive models – one of the most expensive cars in its segment. Diagnostics also turn out to be expensive.

WORTH KNOWING

  • The F10 is the designation of the sedan and the F11 – estate. In the latter, you can traditionally open the entire tailgate or only the rear window.
  • More expensive models in advertisements are usually marked with the LCI symbol. As always with a BMW, it is not about the power or equipment version, but a facelift. LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse (new kidneys, lamps, dual exhaust).

MODEL HISTORY

2009 market premiere
2010 start of sales
2011 525d has 4 instead of 6 cylinders
2012 top diesel 3.0 triturbo 381 hp
2013 model facelift, diesel 518d
2014 new B47 diesels

TYPICAL DEFECTS AND REPAIR COSTS

  • The noise of a 4-cylinder diesel engine – As with other models with N47 units – it’s about the timing. It is worth asking if it has already been replaced, and if not, an excuse is created to negotiate the price.
  • Problems with closing the door – The keyless system is malfunctioning
  • Liquid pump failures in 3.0d engines – The old pump type has a plastic impeller that does not work. New versions of the pumps have a metal impeller.
  • The problematic xDrive – Choosing a car with this option usually means problems. The xDrive versions are cheaper than the regular ones.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

+ Very high driving comfort.
+ Strong, economical and quite durable diesels.
+ Exemplary anti-corrosion protection.
+ A wide range of spare parts.
+ Stable prices on the secondary market.

– High cost of diagnostics of advanced electronics.
– No “armored” gasoline unit.

WORTH BUYING

6-cylinder diesel engines with automatic transmission. As a last resort, the 4-cylinder diesel versions are also remarkable.

WATCH OUT FOR

The gasoline 2.0 Turbo unit, in which the oil pump wears out prematurely, is not famous.
