Volkswagen Golf V 2003-2010 – reviews, used car, typical faults

Read Time:4 Minute, 11 Second
It used to be a dream for many drivers. The used copies have lost their former splendor. This is because many versions cause problems.
  • Years of production: 2003-2008
  • Engines: benz. 1.4-3.2 (75-250 hp), diesels 1.9-2.0 (75-170 hp)
  • Versions: htb 3d, 5d, kmb
  • Length / wheelbase: 420-456 / 258 cm, width / height: 176/148 cm, luggage compartment: htb 350-1305 l, kmb 505-1495 l

BODY FUNCTIONALITY

Due to the longer wheelbase of the Golf V, it also offers a lot of space in the second row. Once considered an exemplary interior, it now looks modest and somewhat spacious. However, you can still enjoy the comfort and handling provided by the independent suspension of both axles (optional – 4×4 drive).

ENGINES

The palette is wide – it even includes the gasoline VR6. Diesel account for half of the offer.

EMERGENCY

Most drivers have heard of serious problems with the 2.0 TDI PD diesel. 1.9 TDI are also not a model – for example, marked with the BXE code, they have weak bushings. In the 1.4 TSI petrol engines, it is possible to stretch the timing chain and to deposit deposits in the intake, which also applies to the 1.6 / 2.0 FSI direct injection. In accident-free cars, corrosion problems do not occur. The peeling material on the interior elements does not have to indicate high mileage (it was too weak).

COSTS

The Golf V can finally be bought for a reasonable price, which, combined with a huge database of replacements and used parts, reduces expenses. This does not mean that it will always be cheap. Repair of the DSG gearbox may be a severe blow to the wallet.

WORTH KNOWING

  • All Golf V engines feature multi-link rear wheel suspension.
  • The starting point for the creation of the Golf V was the PQ35 platform, also used, among others Audi A3 II, Seat Leon II, Skoda Octavia II or VW Scirocco.
  • The 4Motion drive is based on the second-generation Haldex clutch. The smoothness of its operation leaves a lot to be desired. The car can surprise suddenly with a fleeing rear axle.

  • Replacing the bushings in 1.9 TDI – The bushings are best replaced prophylactically because seizing them usually destroys the engine.
  • Nagar in 1.6 / 2.0 FSI engines – Direct injection promotes deposits in the inlet and on the valves
  • DSG gearbox repairs – Optional boxes for mileage over 250 000 km generate costs.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

+ Purchase and maintenance cost are already acceptable.
+ An extensive database of replacements and used parts.
+ Good handling and high driving comfort.

– There is still no shortage of twisted mines. counters and ready for sale.
– DSG gearbox repairs are expensive.
– Risk of failure of the 2.0 TDI PD diesel.

WORTH BUYING

A Golf with a 1.4 / 1.6 engine will be cheap to maintain (especially with LPG). A well-groomed GTI is a sure capital investment.

WATCH OUT FOR

Diesel with mileage 170-220 000 km is usually a bottle of punching the buyer. The real waveforms can be 2 or 3 times higher.
