Volvo V40 II – Large, yet cramped, premium compact with dynamic motors and little loss in value. Here are opinions about a used V40 II, the last compact in the Volvo range.

This Volvo V40 is the first five-door hatchback from the Swedish brand since the old 400 series. The name may be misleading, as it is generally accepted that the letter V in Volvo models stands for a station wagon. Meanwhile, its true development is the word “versatile”, which can be translated as “universal”. Volvo has set a high bar for its compact model, as it has abandoned the production of as many as three other cars: S40 II, V50 and C30. It is worth mentioning that the name “V40” had already appeared as a reference to the estate version of the first generation S40 model from 1995-2004. The second generation of the V40, or rather a separate model from 2012, was developed on the Ford Focus III platform, with a body slightly longer than the original (437 cm). Compared to its predecessors, the body design has changed significantly. The angular shapes typical of Volvo are forgotten, but they have grown old by the time. The V40 II is dominated by curves reminiscent of the larger S60 II, and the silhouette slightly resembles the popular XC60 I SUV. Volvo did not tame interesting stylistic measures in this model, including a line of windows rising upwards or a rear add-on that optically enlarges the rear window.

The Volvo V40 II incorporates all the aspects that characterize a premium compact car: it is well-finished inside, it is dominated by powerful engines, and the list of equipment includes many ground-breaking solutions. Almost 10 years after its debut, it has become clear that it is simply a solid car: the list of faults does not go beyond what is considered acceptable. All this adds up to the very high prices of a used Volvo V40 II. In this material, we will conclude whether the game is worth the proverbial candle.

Looking at the dashboard, you can immediately see what brand of car you are dealing with. The cockpit is a combination of minimalism and elegance, and high-quality materials were used to finish it. Depending on the equipment version, you can count on different colors of the leather upholstery of the seats and door panels (white, cream, black, brown, or even shades of blue). Convenient air conditioning knobs and a numeric keypad are located on a distinctive element – the thin center console. In this model, the so-called virtual indicators show different information for each setting. If the Volvo V40 is to be “versatile”, it is. Storage compartments and drink holders are located throughout the interior, and there is always a place to put a phone, wallet, or keys.

While the Volvo V40 is not a small car, its size quickly becomes less important when the rear doors are opened. Rear passengers have a well-contoured and comfortable couch at their disposal, but using its potential effectively limits the negligible amount of space in the rear passenger compartment. People measuring 185 cm are already missing it, especially around the head and feet. Attractive styling did not go hand in hand with functionality – the doors do not cover the prominent and easily soiled door sills, and the small windows make for a slightly claustrophobic impression. You can’t see much to the rear from the driver’s seat, so you should look for cars with a rear-view camera. The front is much better, also in terms of visibility. The luggage compartment holds 335 liters, which is an optimal result in the class, but small considering the dimensions of the Volvo. Access to it is limited by a small tailgate and a very high loading sill. Fortunately, its finish and practical value cannot be complained about: the seats fold down without creating a step, creating a flat luggage space (provided the floor is in a higher position).

It is a tradition for the Volvo brand to be messy with the abundant engine range. All gasoline engines are modern turbocharged units. First, 1.6-liter Ford engines (T2 / T3 / T4; 120/150/180 hp respectively) and 2-liter units (1984 cm³) with five cylinders in-line (T4 / T5; 180/214 hp) were installed, at the top of the range is Volvo’s top 5-cylinder 2.5-liter (254 hp). In 2015, new 1.5 variants (T2 / T3; 122/152 hp) were introduced in place of 1.6. At the same time, the 4-cylinder 2.0 (1969 cm³) with a wide power spectrum: 122 HP (T2), 152 HP (T3), 190 HP (T4) and 245 HP in the T5 made their debut, which fell out of the aforementioned 2.5 R5. The 5-cylinder 2.0 was on offer until 2018, so it’s easy to make a mistake. The turbo-diesel range is much easier to understand as it includes three units: the PSA borrowed 1.6 (114hp; D2), the 5-cylinder 2.0 (1984cc; 150/177hp; D3 / D4) and the 2.0 introduced after 2015 4-cylinder head (1969 cm³; 120/150/190 hp; D2 / D3 / D4). 6-speed gearboxes have become a standard in the Volvo V40, while the “automatic” (classic Geartronic and Powershift dual-clutch gearboxes) went to at least 150 hp petrol and all diesels. The 4 × 4 drive is only available for the T4 and T5 versions.

Volvo V40 II – failure rate, typical faults

Due to its relationship with the Focus, the Volvo V40 is stable in handling and is in the lead in this respect. The basic engines already propel the car sufficiently and consume little fuel – approx. 5.5 l / 100 km of average fuel consumption in the 1.6 T2 and even a liter less in the basic diesel. The 115hp D2 engine is a recommended PSA design, used in Ford as TDCi and Peugeot / Citroen as HDi. Both it and the 2.0 diesels used a belt-driven timing, the replacement period of which is better shortened to 60 thousand. km. In the 2-liter ones, we should additionally check the condition of the V-belt, because after breaking it, it can screw into the timing. Users also report cases of block breakage and DPF malfunction. In addition, there is a risk of leakage of washers under the injectors on 1.6 diesel engines. Other ailments? Clogged EGR valves and jerking Powershift boxes. The Volvo V40 is not free from defects in onboard electronics, which is a bit surprising in such an expensive car. We are talking here, among others with a modern BLIS system that monitors the blind spot while driving on a road with multiple lanes.

Summary of the used Volvo V40 II

It is a safe and refined, although not completely failure-free model, which translates into visual values over functionality. That’s why it’s hard to call the Volvo V40 II the perfect second-hand compact, especially as it still costs a fortune. The purchase can be treated as a small investment: after a few years of driving a modern hatchback, we will sell it for decent money (Volvo loses little in value).
