Volvo XC90 I 2002-2014 – reviews, typical faults

Read Time:3 Minute, 25 Second

Volvo XC90 I – The X5 has an image of a winner, ML is a symbol of financial success. The Volvo XC90 looks like a family car and thus conquered the market.

  • Years of production: 2002-2014
  • Engines: benz. 2.5-4.4 (200-315 hp), diesels 2.4 (163-200 hp)
  • Versions: SUV
  • Length / wheelbase: 481/286 cm, width / height: 190/179 cm, luggage compartment: 613-1835 l

Volvo XC90 I – BODY FUNCTIONALITY

Over the 12 years of production, over 630,000 units were produced (5- and 7-seater versions). Interestingly, throughout this period, the car practically did not change. As part of the facelift, only details were refined to make it even more comfortable and safer. Currently, it has an established position in the aftermarket, because it has proved to be a solid structure and perfectly protected against corrosion.

Volvo XC90 I – ENGINES

Durable diesel (2.4 liters in three power versions – 163, 185 and 200 HP) is the most popular. Petrol units are an alternative. As befits the older Volvo – almost everyone can have an LPG installation. The icing on the cake is the 4.4 V8 engine, which was developed by Yamaha. It is durable, has a high work culture and … absorbs fuel at a rate appropriate to the capacity.

Volvo XC90 I – EMERGENCY

The weakest point is the automatic gearboxes. To serve as long as possible, every 60 thousand. km it is worth changing the oil in them. If you are towing heavy trailers, you might consider installing a transmission oil cooler.

COSTS

When you buy the XC90, it’s not worth saving money as servicing is expensive.

MARKET SITUATION

400 cars to choose from – from domestic to imported ones. Nearly 70% of the available XC90s have a diesel under the hood.

WORTH KNOWING

  • The Swedish SUV does not disappoint when it comes to safety. It was the first in its class to receive, for example, the ESP with an anti-rollover function.
  • Among the XC90s imported from the USA, you can find copies with only the front drive. This is evidenced by the fifth character in the VIN – if it is the letter N or Y, the XC90 data has no drive on both axles.
  • The 4×4 drive (fixed at the front, attached to the rear) was developed by Haldex.

TYPICAL DEFECTS AND REPAIR COSTS

  • 4×4 Failures  – The rear axle drive usually fails due to damage to the bevel gear.
  • Problems with automatic transmissions – Not infrequently, the transmission is only suitable for a comprehensive regeneration.
  •  The vibration of the powertrain – The reason is often damaged cushions securing the engine and gearbox.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

+ High level of safety and comfort.
+ Overall mechanical durability
+ Exemplary corrosion protection.

– Not very durable gearboxes (especially in cars from before 2005).
– Difficult access to engine accessories.
– Purchase and repair costs.

WORTH BUYING

The younger the car with better-documented history, the better. The actual runs of many XC90s are already monstrous.

WATCH OUT FOR

The oldest cars with automatic transmissions. Ideally, if the dealer can document the renovation.
